Malcolm Galdwell’s new article in the New Yorker, “The Risk Pool”, makes a case for universal health care and pension benefits. The implications for companies such as GM are enormous so one has to wonder why they haven’t supported universal healthcare and pension benefits. I wonder if most Americans realize we all pay for it through higher product prices and taxes anyway. Might as well make it official.

Healthcare and Pension Benefits
Saturday, August 26th, 2006I used to like CNN
Thursday, August 17th, 2006CNN used to be a good news source. I didn’t mind it when they repeated the same news over and over. But then things took a turn for worse when they started trying to find news, picking up small stories from affiliates across the country. I think that’s why everyone thinks we’re a country of pedophiles because of all the stories about kids disappearing. I question whether America is statistically any more dangerous for kids today than it was 30 years ago when I was growing up.
Now we have a war in Iraq and the potential for the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict turning into WWIII and CNN is covering JonBenet Ramsey. I’m sorry about what happened to her but there are a few other world events that will have much more impact on our world tomorrow.
I wonder how much magazines like People and Us have also trained people to pay more attention to who some celebrity is sleeping with rather than some wars that have killed thousands?
Fitness Equipment
Wednesday, August 9th, 2006In my year and a half in the fitness industry, a couple of new products have come out that are very different than anything else out there. The first, the Kinesis, came out in 2005. It’s an exercise system designed for group personal training. It allows you to do exercises previously not possible on any equipment. Unfortunately, we don’t have one yet due to a lack of space.
This spring, we saw the introduction of the Cardio Wave. We were among the first gyms in the US with the Wave–maybe the first. The big difference with the Wave is that it works the glutes more than any other cardio piece out there. It’s definitely harder than most other cardio machines. The Wave hasn’t been as popular as I would have expected but I believe that memebers will eventually overcome their fear of trying new things to discover that it’s a great workout.
